Spumoni In Greece

If you were to find Spumoni in Greece with me he would be enjoying the pleasant spring weather and beautiful scenery. The trip started in Crete with 3 or 4 night stays in Heraklion, Rethimno and Chania. There was still a little bit of snow in the mountains. But most of the creeks had already dried up due to the low amount of winter precipitation.

The wildflowers in April were quite lovely! They come and go quickly on Crete, so I felt fortunate to be able to enjoy the bursting display of color.

All 3 of these cities are on the north shore of the island. They all have nice harbors, enjoyable, walkable old towns and great food at reasonable prices. One nice surprise was the incredibly tasty ice cream in Rethimno at a place called Cow Scream. By far the best ice cream I’ve ever had in Europe. The only thing that comes close is the gelato at LaRomana in Rome and some other cities.

Having the Spirit of Spumoni in Greece with me on May 10th was a very emotional experience. It was the 17th anniversary of his departure from earthly life. So, to honor his memory I did the hike along the rim of the caldera in Santorini from Fira to Oia.

This is one of the most spectacular day hikes in Greece. You get incredible views of the island, caldera and remnants of the volcano. Even more amazing was the boat ride that I did 2 days later inside the caldera. It was the only sunny day on Santorini and I was rewarded with some incredible views looking back at the cliffs and villages.

When I look back someday and ponder what it would have been like to be with Spumoni in Greece it will be the memories of the walk from Fira to Oia that will be foremost in my mind. The spirit of Spumoni lives on in his message of “kindness, love and inspiration.” And few things in life are more inspiring than the walk from Fira to Oia.
